Guiding Light and One Life To Live star Jerry verDorn dies aged 72

The actor, who appeared in two major US soaps, died at his home in Sparta, New Jersey on Sunday (May 1), his family has announced.

verDorn is perhaps best known for playing attorney Ross Marler on Guiding Light.

He featured in the CBS soap for 26 years, between 1979 and 2005, appearing in over 500 episodes, and also featured in 1983 TV film The Cradle Will Fall.

For his role in Guiding Light, verDorn won two Daytime Emmys, and received several nominations in the same category throughout his time on the show.

After departing the soap in 2005, he joined One Life to Live as Clint Buchanan in 2005, taking over the role from previous actor Clint Ritchie, who had played the character since 1979.

verDorn starred on the show for eight years, until its conclusion in 2012, but he later appeared in the brief revival in 2013.

The soap star was born on November 23, 1949, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and initially wanted to be an English teacher, but ended up in theatre, appearing in multiple roles in stage productions.

He is survived by his wife Beth, sons Jake and Peter, his sister Bonnie Simpfender, brothers Jim and Dan, and grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
